Junior Rowing and Sculling
ACRC – An Amateur Rowing Association Go-Row accredited junior coaching centre.
- Are you in Year 7 or above?
- Do you fancy splashing about down on the river?
- Do you like having FUN?
Rowing could be the sport for you!
Rowing and Sculling are great ways to make new friends, explore riverbanks, eat picnics and generally have a good time!
‘Rowing’ means paddle with one oar (like Sir Steven Redgrave) and sculling means paddle with two! You will start by learning to scull.
The club has lots of beginner sculling boats (called viruses, banana boats or lemons depending on who you ask!), which are great for splashing around, getting stuck in the bank or giving someone a free ride – oh yes! And learning to scull in!
As you get more experienced, you will progress to racing boats. These are very wobbly – but also go really fast! The club has lots of junior racing boats – singles (one person) doubles (two), quadruples or quads (four) and also an octuple (eight people - scary!). Most of these boats were provided by project Oarsome, a Lottery funded scheme to promote rowing in State schools. The two schools (Wellsway, Keynsham and Oldfield, Bath) involved in the scheme, also own some of the equipment, which was provided by the Lottery funded ‘Awards for All’ scheme.
Racing
The club encourages members to have a go at racing - not for everyone of course - but many people enjoy the challenge. The junior section is no exception, and we try to find suitable competative opportunities for everyone.
Over the past nine years we have had lots of wins and good placings, some of them at National level and in the past seven years at International level – which has involved racing in France, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Wales, Italy and Scotland!
We also have a large group of recreational (non competing) scullers who also have a lot of fun!
Joining
As the junior section of the club is quite large, we now operate a waiting list for juniors who'd like to have a go. Those on the list are usually started off together at Easter. Remember that you will be expected to swim 100m fully clothed (in a swimming pool) when you join so it might be an idea to brush up your swimming skills while you are waiting to start.
If you’d like to be added to the list, then contact the Junior Organiser, Penny Senior for more information. She will need you name, date of birth and a contact email (if possible or phone number if not).

Training Times
The Junior squad meets at the following times:
All year round:
- Saturday 9.00am
- Sunday 10.00am and 11.30am
Summer only
- Tuesday 6.00pm
- Thursday 6.00pm
- Friday 3.30pm (Wellsway and Oldfield Schools only)
Winter only
- Wednesday 7.00pm, club circuit training
- Monday 6.15pm, junior land training session (term time only)
Coaching, Good Practice and Child Protection
The club has several qualified coaches and uses the Amateur Rowing Association’s coaching schemes and ‘Go-row’ methodology. ACRC is a Sport England ‘Clubmark’ club and has achieved bronze in the Bath and North East Somerset Council club quest accreditation scheme.
The club has a child protection policy and encouraged good practice. It is also registered with the local constabulary ‘Child Safe’ scheme.
There is a list of Junior rules and codes of conduct (for coaches, officials, volunteers and parents) available on the club notice board.
All youngsters are expected to complete a swim test (100m, fully clothed) and are encouraged to complete their water safety certificate (which involved deliberately capsizing a boat and learning what to do in that situation – all in the safe environment of a swimming pool). The club has buoyancy aids for those that have not yet completed the test.
