Training: what we get up to in order to make boats move faster

Rowing and sculling are physically very demanding sports and a very high level of fitness is required to complete at a high level. However, anyone is encouraged to participate in the sport, whatever their aspirations.

Anyone who is taking medication, and is an active rower, is encouraged to contact UK Sport, Ethics and Anti-Doping, 40 Bernard Street, London. WC1N 1ST to obtain a current Anti-Doping Code: Prohibited Classes of Substances and Prohibited Methods card. They can also be contacted by telephone 020 7841 9530, e-mail or try visiting their website.

During the UK Summertime, we row on the water in the evenings. Club nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays, with rowing on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Crews wishing to train more are most welcome to train more often and are encouraged to do so.

Land and water training advice is always on-hand from one of the club’s qualified coaches. This includes ergo training programmes for both the Winter and Summer months.

Circuit training starts on Wednesday  October 4th in the girls’ gym at Wellsway School ( Chandag Road, Keynsham ) and will continue into Spring 2007.  This session is also open to non-members and costs £2 per session ( or £18 for the term – 12 sessions ).  Students and juniors pay £1 per session ( £9 per term ).

The session starts at 7pm with a warm-up jog, and then moves into the gym for stretching and flexibility starting at 7.15pm.  This is followed by a warm-up activity ( stepping or shuttle runs ) and then a body weight circuit ( sit ups, squat thrusts, press ups etc ) and finally a cool down.  The session finishes at approximately 8.45 pm.

All ages and levels of fitness are encouraged to come along and have a go.  It’s a great way to get fit!  Please contact info@avoncountyrowingclub.org.uk for more information – or just turn up one Wednesday evening to have a go!
