Project Oarsome: ACRC working with schools

"Project Oarsome is an investment in the future of sport in this country. Project Oarsome is an investment in youth, an investment in schools and importantly an investment in partnership with rowing clubs all over England."

That's just some of what the ARA has to say about Project Oarsome, its scheme developed to introduce rowing into schools as a regular sport, along side the more familiar sports such as football, rugby, hockey and netball.

This section of the ACRC website is dedicated to the clubs activities for Project Oarsome, the events it runs and how its membership of the scheme is benefitting the affiliated schools in the Bath area.

One of the club's junior scullers puts what they have learnt, as part of Project Oarsome, to good use.
Avon County Rowing Club joined the Project Oarsome Scheme in 2000 – forming formal links with Wellsway School, Keynsham and Oldfield School, Bath.  The club had to raise over £10,000 to join the scheme and in return has over £40,000 of junior equipment

A special session is held for these two schools on Friday after school (when light permits) – when up to 40 children will be found splashing about on the river and generally having fun!  Some youngsters choose to attend the clubs ‘open’ junior beginner sessions (Sunday 11.15am) instead of or as well as the Friday afternoon slot.

The club also runs taster days – when 30 children spend the day learning how to use rowing machines (ergometers), having a look around the boathouses, learning about the equipment involved and having a go on the river!

Through the scheme the club now has a steady stream of children joining the club both recreationally and competitively.  Rowing is no longer seen as an unusual sport for the pupils from either school to participate in.

Obviously this has meant that the junior membership of the club has expanded enormously and the senior membership has also increased as mums and dads are also tempted to follow their children’s puddles and have a go.  As well as children from the two PO schools, there are children from more than 10 other schools who currently paddle with the club.
