Learning to row and scull at ACRC

About learning to row and scull at Avon County

All beginners are welcome at Avon County Rowing Club.  A large percentage of our membership is made up from people who have learnt to row at the club and we are always happy to see new faces!

You can start to row or scull at almost any age – in the last few yeas our youngest recruits have been eight and the oldest in their fifties, although there are no age limits.  If you are unused to exercise, or have had back problems in the past, please check with your GP before starting!

All beginners are now taught to scull (paddle in a boat on their own using two oars).  This has the great advantage that you learn at your own pace and don’t have the added complication of trying to paddle in time with someone else (which happens in crew boats).

Once you have mastered the basics in a stable boat, you will then move onto more unstable boats and to crew sculling.  You will then have the choice of continuing to scull or to have a go at rowing (one oar each) or both.  Most people choose the latter!

What to wear!

Nothing you value!  Clothing can get muddy and torn so don’t wear your posh togs!  Fairly tight fitting, stretchy clothing and trainers are best.  Jeans are to be avoided!

What else do I need?

Enthusiasm!  All your equipment will be provided so you don’t need anything else.  It is a wise idea to bring a change of clothes and a towel but you will rarely need them(!)  If you wear glasses, a glasses tie is also a good idea!

When can I start?

Soon!  Get in touch and we will see what we can do!
