Sunny and Windy

Avon County RC rowers and coaches headed back to Nottingham over the weekend of 25/26 July as part of the English and Welsh Home Countries Regatta teams.

Former Junior Sean Bathe Taylor represented England in the 2- with CBRC crew-mate Billy Downey. The crew was coached by Austin Bathe-Taylor.  Sean was Avon’s first senior male international representative at the HCI continuing a long tradition first established by the Club’s Junior Co-ordinator Penny Senior in the winning English Women's Lightweight 4- in 1999.  Sean and Billy produced one of the best performances of the day culminating in them rowing down the favoured Welsh pair in the last 500m to claim their first gold medals of the day.  Sean and Billy also rowed in the 8o and once again claimed gold – this time holding off Scotland in the chase to the line.

Avon Junior Hannah O was once again selected to represent Wales and although the Welsh coxless 4 made up with crew mates from KGS, Monmouth Comp and Llandaff produced their best performance of the year they were unable to make an impression on the heavier crews around them. The crew were also half of the eight and their third place was one of the better Welsh Junior women’s results of the day.

Hannah O was able to claim one prize over the weekend with a win in WJ18 singles at Bewdley Sprint. Despite an early morning departure from Nottingham and a dead heat in the Final she was able to win her re-row with an “Easily” verdict before the traditional post regatta celebration of a beef burger and a very long sleep.

Other Avon wins came from Elliot and Rory in J14 2x and Shannon and Anna in WJ14 2x. Other Junior and Women’s crews from Avon all produced good performances with a number of beaten finalists throughout the weekend.
