Not just another wet and windy weekend in Nottingham
Avon Gold and selection to England and Wales HCI teams
Avon County Rowing Club took possibly its largest ever entry to the National Rowing Championships held from 17 -19 July at the National Watersport Centre.
First up on Friday were the J14s and J15s. Every crew or sculler successfully got through their first rounds.
The J14 composite 4x+ of Elliot and Rory from Avon and Karl and Harry from Wycliffe coxed by Hannah G was one of the fastest 12 crews in their 25 crew entry and successfully made it as far as the semi finals.
WJ14 single Alice H got through her first round to a rep which she then won to get to her first single scull multi-lane final.
Elliot also got to his final with dominant performances in the early rounds of J14 singles only to suffer a shoulder injury on his way to the start of his final.
Molly and Charlotte dominated their eliminator to guarantee their WJ15 2x semi-final place and the WJ14 4x+ of Hannah A , Hannah S, Georgie and Kirsty coxed by Oli also made it to the semi finals.
Hannah O and Nora got as far as their Rep in WJ2- only to miss out on a final place by one position.
Hannah O was also selected in a Welsh Composite 4- with crewmates from Kingston Grammar School, Llandaff and Monmouth Comp. They were placed 5th overall and will now represent Wales at the Home Countries Match over the weekend of 25-26 July.
The Welsh 4- was also half the selected Welsh 8 who created the first Avon high spot of the weekend when they took Gold over LEH and a Scottish Composite. They took the lead from the outset and produced a gritty performance to take the title by just over 1 length.
Avon's Sean Bathe-Taylor was entered in O2- with Billy Downey from City of Bristol RC. Despite some illness over the weekend they finished a creditable but disappointing fourth in their final. Shortly afterwards the Avon coaches were put on notice that the pair may be needed for the HW2- slot for England at the Home Countries Match as the three crews who finished ahead of them were not eligible. The selection was confirmed a few hours later so Avon will be represented on two national teams next weekend.
Well done to the respective coaches and thanks to those parents who helped with Team Avon over the weekend.
Congratulations from Avon also to former ACRC junior Gabbie Rodriguez who took U23 doubles representing Bath University.
