Womens Head of the River Race- 7th March 2009

For the second year running ACRC sent a crew to London to compete in the Women's Head of the River Race. Held over the famous boat race course on the Thames, it was a formidable challenge!!

After an early start that should only ever be seen if a holiday is the reason, we set off to London.

The crew this year was expertly coxed by Penny and included Nora Spicer, Hannah O'Driscoll, Kate Hall, Kelly Thomas, Sophie Lemoine, Polly McGuigan, Clair Ponting and Di Walker.

On arrival in London we were delighted that the weather was fine and sunny, and most importantly- NOT WINDY!!

We boated after rigging and warming up-and after a quick blast up to the start and back, as well as some giggles at a stroppy marshall, we settled in for the long wait until the start.

The race itself was a solid one, with the crew working well together. The various landmarks on the course (Hammersmith Bridge and Chiswick Eyot amongst others) flew by and following an epic battle with a Nottingham University Crew we finished in 23.02, 6th out of 10 novice provincial club entries- not bad for a crew that had never rowed together as of 2 weeks before the event!

Well done to everyone for a brilliant effort, Penny for coxing and towing and to Ann for the loan of her car!!
