Recent Regattas

We have had a busy few weeks recently with crews competing at all sorts of events ...

National Veteran Championships

Our intrepid Veteran E (average age 55) coxless four made the annual pilgrimage to Nottingham for the National Veteran Championships.  This is raced over 1000m at Holme Pierrpont, the National Watersports centre.  There were 6 crews in the event - and our chaps came a creditable second to pick up the silver medal - just 1.86 seconds behind the winners from Wallingford & Thames Tradesmen and well ahead of Nottingham who were third.

Henley Womens Regatta

Read about this in the womens section.

Ironbridge & Ironbridge Sprint Regattas

A small but dedicated group of juniors raced at Ironbridge regatta.  This was raced over 1000m  on the river Severn.  When we arrived on Friday night, the river was still and low - however by Saturday morning it was a raging torrent (probably due to the massive rain storm that hit our tents at 3am!)  Actually it wasn't really a raging torrent, but it did come up which meant that we spend quite alot of the weekend paddling, as you had to wade in to boat!

Saturday felt lilke a private match between Avon and Runcorn as we seemed to spend most of the day racing them!  We had several heat wins (J15 1X, WJ16 1X. WJ4X-) but no pots.

The 500m Sprint on Sunday saw a couple of senior crews joining in - the womens novice four (Ali, ClairS, Polly and Jane, coxed by Tony) won their semi final convincingly but just lost the final to City of Oxford.  KateH raced in womens senior 4 singles but couldn't quite match the pace of her Evesham Opponent who beat her by 1 length.

The junior squad had a much better day than the Saturday - several crews over turning the verdicts of the previous day.  The following crews won:

 Event  Crew
 J15 1X  Gabriel
 WJ16 1X  HannahO
 J15 2X  Gabriel, Scott
 WJ16 2X  Sophie, Katy
WS2 4X-  Sophie, Katy, Taylor, HannahO
WJ13 4X+  HannahA, Georgie, HannahS, Kirsty and Scott

Scary thought - the age range of competitors from the club over these few events span 47 years ...
