B&NES staff have a go at rowing!
When we signed onto the Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) Get Active Scheme I'm not sure we really knew what we were letting ourselves in for! B&NES are keen to get people more active and have started their campaign by targetting their own staff and offering taster sessions for them to try out new activities. They have already had a go at Belly Dancing!!!
So, thought Philippa, our noble novice coordinator, this might be a chance to swell (the already growing) group of beginners we now have in the club! She set up a couple of introductory sessions at the B&NES offices - 'the quick guide to rowing' - and then organised 4 water sessions for them to have a go! The water sessions involved 2 x 1 hour slots - each catering for 6 beginners who would be given a tour of the boathouse and then have a go at sculling in a virus. The mathematicians amongst you will have worked out that that meant we could offer 48 taster sessions for these staff.
Ambitious? Perhaps but we reasoned that the 3 people who were likely to be interested could always do several sessions and at least you could say we tried!
Early indications were not terribly encouraging - only a few people turned up for the presentations but then the booking began ... and before we knew it 34 people had signed up!!!!

The weather over the four days varied from windy (combined with a strong stream) to gloriously sunny (and still). Much fun was had by all - thank you to all of the coaches who helped! 32 staff attended in the end - and at least 13 of these have now signed onto our learn to row program!

Well done Philippa!
