Womens Head of the River
When Penny arrived at slough Holiday Inn with the boat trailer the night before WHORR we (Penny, Sal, Ann L, and Dina O) battled with the wind and rain to park the trailer, with the awful thought at the back of our heads that there was no way that the race was going to go ahead, however the next morning dawned bright and cold with a slight wind to wake us all up. So capped with our brightly coloured bandannas we pushed out onto the Thames to commence battle.
Not only was Avon County represented at Womens Eights head, last weekend, for the first time in some considerable years, but we actually fielded two complete eights. This was a massive achievement in itself and one Penny should be congratulated for. The first crew consisted of Sophie, Kate W, Sallyanne, Taylor, Hannah O, Rachel, Lizzie S, Kate H with Penny coxing, and the second crew was Amy V, Kate M, Frankie, Philippa, Gemma Abby, Alison, Hannah G and Julian Sondheimer (big thanks to Julian who stepped into the coxing breach at the last minute). The majority of these boats consisted of people who had only been sweep rowing since Christmas and had never rowed on the Thames, so well done to everyone.
While we waited to start (1hr 20mins at least) Penny regaled her crew with stories of lucky underwear and tried to impress us with her extensive knowledge of club kit as the fast crews flew past, until we found out that she had a race programme hid at her feet!
Both crews did very well, 1st and 2nd boats were placed 172nd and 230th. As we started at numbers 205 and 222 this was a good result. Everyone agreed it had been a great day and are looking forward to next year when we should be able to start much further up the race.
Well Done Everyone!
